Did you be aware that your tooth is comprised of multiple different parts or layers? True - our teeth don't have the same white, hard and white texture throughout. Today, we're going to introduce you to the layers! Let's discuss TOOTH ANATOMY. A tooth is comprised of three layers: THE ENEMAL It's visible outside tooth layers. It's EXTREMELY hard. In fact, it's the strongest substance found in our body, able to withstand the teeth and chewing force all day. It is made up of mainly calcium phosphate mineral. However, despite its incredible power, it has an issue which is acid. If you consume certain substances, such as sugar, or foods that are high in carbohydrate the bacteria that live within your mouth utilize this to make acids that in turn cause the destruction of minerals within the enamel. In time, if proper oral hygiene practices aren't maintained or the person drinks too much of these beverages or food items, they can eat away at the enamel to penetrate the second layer that is the innermost part of the tooth, and cause an opening - also known as the cavity. Our Burlington Sedation dentist fills in cavities at this point to stop further (sometimes irreparable) damage. THE DENTIN Dentin is the second (or middle) layer in the dental, which is the one that lies directly below the enamel on the surface. Dentin is yellowish in color, and it is not as strong as enamel. Actually, it's 9 times less hard. Dentin is made up of minerals as well as thousands of small tubules which connect towards the upper layer, the pulp. It is important to treat tooth decay particularly after it has been able to reach the dentin layers in order to ensure that it does not spread into the middle layer. THE PULP The pulp forms the middle parts of a tooth. The pulp is the softest layer that contains vital tissues made up of nerves and blood. After tooth decay has caused enough damage that it can penetrate the dentin, enamel and finally the pulp, inevitably the root canal procedure or extraction may be required. It's fascinating to know about the different layers of the tooth! It's also crucial to see the dentist regularly to make sure that decay doesn't damage the precious layers. Early intervention and prevention are essential! Want to know what are teeth made of?
